How much does your kids know about your health history as a parent? How much do you know about your own parents’ medical history? How much does your parents know about your own grannies? Are your kids holding the belief that “it’s village people at work” just like you do? Did we just say we are in 2019?

Read this:

James was seen with a degenerative neuromuscular disorder (muscular dystrophy). He inherited this gene from his father whom he watched suffer for over 10years, became bed ridden, muscle wasted away and he died. James is only 36yrs old, he already has left side muscle weakness, severe back and shoulder pains and considered ‘disabled’ but he tries to move around. The focus for him is to try and remain mobile as much as he can before his muscle wastes away completely.

James has 3 brothers, they all have muscular dystrophy but their presentation (symptoms) are all different. It’s hard to connect the dots among them all except they mention “it’s a family genetic disorder”.... that simple statement helps their respective doctors when they establish as new patients with them. It helps them formulate effective management/treatment plan for them rather than chasing the ‘ghost’

James has a son (Lee) who is 9yrs old but knows well about his dad’s condition. Lee is currently not showing any symptoms of Muscular dystrophy but he knows well that in some years to come, he will. James was proactive by taking Lee to a geneticist (A doctor that studies inherited traits), they found out that Lee has an homozygous trait of muscular dystrophy! This means he has high risk of developing the disease. At age 9, Lee is fully aware of what is to come in his near future so he has started seeking information that can help him.

At a recent visit with his doctor, he asked if  there are any current/proposed trials/study to look into delaying genetic manifestation of the disease!.....Now, that’s too smart!

Believe it or not, Lee has been enrolled in a current clinical trial going on and he may be extremely lucky to be the first of 3 generations not to suffer too much of this debilitating disease

So, are you still not telling your kids your diagnoses? Are you keeping it a secret? Do you have diabetes but you are not explaining it to the children? Was your parent diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension or even basic cholesterol problem but you have not told the children?......you should do so! Don’t delay! Medical diagnoses should no longer be a thing to be ashamed of, it’s important that every new diagnoses is added to your personal medical ‘list’. Do you even have one? You should!

Buy a basic journal today or create a file on your computer and name it “Family Medical History”. Each time someone is diagnosed with something significant, add it under the person’s name and include date! You will be thankful you did this in 10yrs to come.
